Hong Kong - Asia's World City
One of our favorite things to do in Hong Kong is to ride the Star Ferry across the harbor from Hong Kong island to Kowloon (the mainland side of Hong Kong). Out in the middle of the harbor, you can look out of the ferry and see both skylines, filled with huge skyscrapers. At night is the best time, when all of the buildings are lit up with multi-colored flashing lights and pictures.
The same thing always impresses me when we leave the ferry and begin to walk down the stairs out into the street. You may imagine that since we are in Hong Kong, we mainly see Chinese people on the street. In some areas, of course, that is the case. But downtown at the Star Ferry, you enter into another world that is filled with people from all over the globe, and all walks of life.
I marvel as I hear a couple speaking German behind me, and some Filipino maids chattering on my right. I glance to my left as I pass an Arabian man wearing his traditional turban and robe. Walking towards me is a group of Indonesian maids wearing their muslim head coverings and drinking some Starbucks coffee. Not long after entering the street, some Indian men approach me and mumble under their breath, "Copy watch, m'am, copy watch? " Ignoring them, I continue walking through the mass of people. I nearly bump into an English business men dressed in his expensive suit, talking about investments on his cell phone. There's a young Pakistani mother walking beside me dragging along a 3 year old and trying to push a stroller through the crowd. Still up ahead, I notice a tall young woman standing out in the crowd, and with her looks and clothes gives me the impression she is a famous European model.
Finally, I notice that there are some Chinese people scattered in amongst the international crowd! "Isn't this Hong Kong?" , I'm thinking in amazement. I feel like I could be anywhere in the world, or perhaps, everywhere in the world! Hong Kong really is a world city.
In Mathew 24: 14, Jesus tells the disciples, " This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to ALL the nations, and then the end will come. "
Every single nation of the world needs to hear the good news about Jesus! As we walk the streets of Hong Kong, we see that this city isckmguys.png a place of huge opportunity. As we have said before, God has shown us that Hong Kong is a gateway city to the rest of Asia. If you are impacting Hong Kong for Christ, you are impacting the world!
As we seek to follow God's leading, we are asking God to use us in Hong Kong for His purposes - to bring His truth to the many nations that are represented here. Many of the people that are from other countries are here for a few years and then move somewhere else. If they meet Jesus in Hong Kong, they will bring His truth to the next part of the world they settle in.
God has graciously given us opportunities to impact different people groups in Hong Kong. Craig has been helping to disciple people from Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Africa, and even some from Hong Kong. Tammy has been making friendships with mothers from Pakistan and India.
We also continue to have on our hearts the Chinese people of Hong Kong, and we know that God desires to use the people of this great city to impact Asia for Jesus. He has placed His hand of blessing on this city in order to use them to bless the nations surrounding them. There is a great army of laborers for Jesus coming from this place!
Please pray for all the people in Hong Kong, that God will draw the lost to Himself. Pray that God will raise up His church in Hong Kong to be united and work together to reach the nations. Pray for our family, that God will use us for His glory and His purposes in this city.
God is great, and worthy to be praised! We love you!
